How to Calculate Blood Percentages

Since we have received several questions about how to calculate the blood percentage of Joe Hancock for a particular horse, here's a quick tutorial.

Each generation provides a value:

  1. 1st generation = 50% each,
  2. 2nd generation = 25% each,
  3. 3rd generation = 12.5% each,
  4. 4th generation = 6.25% each,
  5. 5th generation = 3.125% each,
  6. 6th generation = 1.5625% each,
  7. 7th generation = .78125% each,
  8. 8th generation = .390625% each,
  9. 9th generation = .1953125% each,
  10. 10th generation = .09765625% each

(you can see the pattern is half the value of the previous generation).

FOR EXAMPLE: If you have pedigree with Joe Hancock once in the 4th and 5th generation, twice in the 7th generation, once in the 8th generation and then four times in the 9th generation, it would be: 6.25 + 3.125 + (2 x .78125) + .390625 + (4 x .1953125) = 12.109375 or 12.12% Joe Hancock blood.


Looking at the PEDIGREE

Each generation provides a value:


1st gen = 50% each 2nd gen = 25% each 3rd gen = 12.5% ea 4th gen = 6.25% 5th gen = 3.125% 6th gen = 1.5625%

(it depends on how far back the notable ancestor appears, to calculate the complete percentages of that bloodline)
