Conscientious stallion owners now have the option to have their stallion tested at UC Davis for double roan genes... PLEASE get this done - ideally, we would like to have this verification on all (living) 100% roan producing stallions listed here! This is a free directory and great advertisement for your homozygous roan stallion... let's make good use of it! Thank you!

April 2009 UPDATE: Genetic Roan Zygosity Test - Quarter Horse and Paint Horse Breeds Only

NOTE: This HancockHorses.com project is intended as a reference list of Hancock bloodline Stallions that are producing (or have produced in their lifetime) 100% roan foals. There is now a test through UC Davis equine genetics lab (SEE ABOVE): It is highly recommended that you test your possible Homozygous Roan stallion with this test.

For a while we will rely on AQHA records & the word of these stallion owners and owners of progeny to provide the information. If it comes to our attention that any of these has sired a solid (NON-roan) foal then they will be removed from this page, unless size of foal crop indicates probable cheating on the part of one mare. :o)

If you have or know of a 100% roan producing (Hancock) Quarter Horse stallion that has produced 25 roan offspring, no solid offspring, and half the mares he was bred to were solid, not yet included on this webpage, please email for listing on this page - (this is a free directory service) - send photo + all stallion information, number foals, owner information, etc. For living stallions, this should be reported annually to keep the foal crop statistics updated. And again, for the living stallions, the UC Davis test should be done on your horse.

LEGEND of applicable equine genetic color codes: (to be approved by geneticists, but works for our purposes here so far)

E - RED FACTOR
EE - black, homozygous
Ee - black, heterozygous
ee - chestnut/sorrel
E_ - phenotypically black, red gene unknown (progeny records incomplete or unknown to us)

A - AGOUTI
AA - agouti, homozygous (black horse, black is restricted to points = bay)
Aa - agouti, heterozygous (red horses phenytypically can give no indication of agouti gene)
AAt - bay, carrying brown
AtAt - brown - recessive to bay... restricts less black, the gene for a seal brown

aa - no agouti gene
A_ - known to carry an agouti gene (progeny records incomplete or unknown to us)

Rn - ROAN
Rn/Rn - roan, homozygous (theoretical - no genetic test avail for this yet)
Rn/N - roan, heterozygous (if one foal produced is non-roan, the roan parent is considered Rn)
N/N - markers inconsistent with horse being roan

CH - CHAMPAGNE
Ch/Ch - Two copies of the altered sequence detected. All offspring are expected to be Champagne diluted.
Ch/N - One copy of the altered sequence detected. Chestnut color (red) is diluted to gold, bay to tan with brown points and black to darker tan with brown points.
N/N - No evidence of altered sequence detected.

Cr - CREAM (CREME)
Cr/Cr - homozygous creme gene (cremello [sorrel] or perlino [black or bay])
(2 copies of creme gene bleaches out both red and black hair)
Cr/N - heterozygous creme gene (palomino [sorrel], buckskin [bay] or smoky black)
(one copy of creme gene dilutes only red hair)
N/N- does not carry creme gene (therefore would not be listed in a horse's genetic color code)

D - DUN
D/D - homozygous dun (no genetic test avail for this yet) (dun, grulla, red dun- affects red hair only)
D/N - heterozygous dun (dun, grulla, red dun - affects red hair only)
N/N - does not carry dun gene (would not be listed)

G - GRAY (GREY)
G/G - Two copies of the grey gene. Horse will turn gray and all offspring will be grey.
G/N - One copy of the grey gene. Horse will turn grey and approximately 50% of offspring will be grey.
N/N - No copies of the grey gene. Horse will not turn grey.

O - OVERO (LETHAL WHITE OVERO)
O/O - Only the altered sequence in the EDNRB gene detected. This result has only been obtained with samples from lethal white overo foals.
O/N - One copy of the altered sequence detected. If bred to another N/O horse, there is a 25% chance of producing a lethal white overo foal. The N/O type has been detected in Paints (including breeding stock), Pintos, Thoroughbreds, Miniatures, Quarter Horses and Tennessee Walking Horses.
N/N - No evidence for the altered sequence detected.

Prl - PEARL
Prl/Prl - Two copies of the altered sequence detected. On a chestnut base color, a uniform apricot color of body hair, mane and tail will result.
Prl/N - One copy of the altered sequence detected. If Cream dilution is also present, a pseudo-double Cream dilute phenotype will result.
N/N - No evidence of the altered sequence detected.

S - SABINO 1
SB1/SB1 - Two copies of the Sabino 1 gene detected. Complete or nearly complete white phenotype expected.
SB1/N - One copy of the Sabino 1 gene detected. Horse typically may have 2 or more white legs, blaze, spots or roaning in the midsection and jagged margins around white areas.
N/N - No evidence of altered sequence detected.

TO - TOBIANO
TO/TO - Two copies of altered sequence. Horse is homozygous for Tobiano. All offspring will inherit Tobiano.
TO/N - One copy of altered sequence. Approximately 50% of the offspring will inherit Tobiano.
N/N - No evidence of altered sequence detected. Horse is not Tobiano.

Z - SILVER
Z/Z - Two copies of altered sequence detected. Black-based horses will be chocolate with flaxen or lightened mane and tail. Bay-based horses will have lightened black pigment on lower legs, mane and tail. No effect on chestnut color.
Z/N - One copy of the altered sequence detected. Black-based horses will be chocolate with flaxen or lightened mane and tail. Bay-based horses will have lightened black pigment on lower legs, mane and tail. No effect on chestnut color.
N/N - No evidence of the altered sequence detected.

"I have really enjoyed the info on roan horses. You said that you knew of some homozygous roan non-Hancock bloodline horses. Could you let me know their names, if they are Quarter horses?"

Taking applications for listing all homozygous roans (and other traits) on another website: www.Homozygous-Horses.com. I welcome you to submit any eligible horses for that site any time. It will cover all horse breeds, and directories will be listed by breed, and color (or whatever trait they might be homozygous for). All submissions are welcome. Thank you.

April 2009: (I have not been keeping up on this website lately, I apologize for running behind, but plan to get it updated when i can; i am hanging on to all the updates. Thanks, Weblackey.)
